How it all Started - A bit about Stay
Dry
Personal experience as a caregiver was the starting point for one Whangamata's most
successful businesses, Stay Dry Products, which has
virtually cornered the NZ market for its products.
In 1991 Eleanor Leopold was looking after a relative with Parkinson's disease. Among the problems she had to deal with was incontinence, and
one day in frustration she simply got out her scissors and sewing machine
and designed a pair of waterproof pants.
She made them pretty, with a bit of lace, and when she realised they would
work, she took them up to Moana House to ask if something similar would be
useful for any of the residents there. The answer was an emphatic yes, and
she had her first order for a dozen pairs.
At first, Eleanor worked from home and did the sewing herself, but her business soon began to expand as she visited other residential homes and
designed new styles according to the needs her clients expressed.
She found there was a big gap in the market for the sorts of products she was making, and even now Stay Dry is still the only commercial
manufacturer of these items in the country.
The more Eleanor looked, the more she found was needed, and she believes it has been her flexibility in design and size which has brought her
success. She and her machinists make products for all ages and sizes.
The largest pants she ever designed were a size XXXXXL, 1.5 metres round the waist. But she also designs and produces mattress and pillow
protectors, baby changing mats, arm, leg, heel and elbow protectors, aprons
and bibs, catheter bag covers, chair pads and much more.
"Any fabric product that is needed by carers of the elderly or disabled,
we can provide," she says.
"Whangamata's a great place for this sort of business," she says. "We have
marvelous courier services and I can get most orders to customers in
24 hours. Even the name of the town is an asset - anyone can remember Whangamata, and find us in the phone book."
